Handbook

Every chart, table and calculation a fitter or machinist reaches for. On iPhone and Apple Watch.

Overview

Handbook puts the printed charts, tables and pocket references of a machine shop in your pocket. One hundred tools for machining and fitting, each built to be used at the machine or the bench, with a job waiting.

It was designed on a workshop floor by a machinist, for the questions that come up between cuts.

Machining

Answers you can check.

Speeds, feeds, threads and tooling, with the working shown so you can check it.

  1. Spindle Speed

Enter a cutting speed and a diameter, and get the spindle speed with its formula underneath. 180 m/min on a 50 mm bar is 1146 RPM.

    • Formula shown
    • Metric and imperial
    • Recommended cutting speeds
The Spindle Speed calculator showing 1146 RPM, with the formula and the two input values.
  2. Thread Dimensions

    • Major, pitch and minor diameters
    • Thread depth
    • Internal and external
The Thread Dimensions calculator showing the diameters of an M12 by 1.75 thread.
  3. Speeds and Feeds Advisor

    • Material groups
    • How hard to push
    • Speed, feed and depth of cut
The Speeds and Feeds Advisor showing 1273 RPM, a feed of 382 mm/min and a depth of cut of 0.5 to 4 mm for steel.

Fitting

Built for the fitting bench, too.

Hydraulics, bearings, fasteners and augers, for the jobs away from the machine.

    • Bore, rod, pressure, flow
The Cylinder Force and Speed calculator showing push force, pull force, extend speed and retract speed.
  2. Bolt Torque

The right torque for the size and grade, dry or lubricated. An M12 8.8 takes 88.0 N·m.

    • Size and grade
    • Dry or lubricated

    • BS and BU sizes
    • By cross-section
The O-Ring Sizes chart, with a dimension diagram and a table of sizes for a 1/8 inch cross-section.
  4. Auger Guide

Measure a flight once and order it right, with every dimension labelled on the diagram.

    • Labelled diagram
    • Every flight dimension
The Auger Guide, with a labelled diagram of an auger and its five dimensions.

Find anything

Everything is where you expect it.

Two tabs, sorted the way the trade thinks, and a search that knows every tool.

  1. Machining

Turning, milling, drilling, tooling, reference, CNC and measurement.

    • Turning
    • Milling
    • Drilling
    • CNC
The Machining tab, listing the Turning, Milling, Drilling, Tooling, Reference and CNC groups.
  2. Fitting

From hydraulics and bearings to augers, balancing and adhesives.

    • Hydraulics
    • Bearings
    • Augers
    • Adhesives
The Fitting tab, listing eight groups from Essentials to Splines and Driveline.
  3. Search

Type a few letters to find a tool. If the answer is not a tool, ask Spectre instead.

    • Every tool
    • Ask Spectre from results
Search results for the word thread, listing eight matching tools.

Spectre

An assistant that speaks the trade.

Ask the way you would ask the person at the next machine. Spectre shows every step.

  1. Worked out, not guessed

Spectre runs Handbook’s own calculators and shows the inputs it used.

    • Handbook’s own calculators
    • Inputs shown
Spectre answering a question about slotting 6061 with a 10 mm three-flute carbide end mill, after using the spindle speed, feed rate and removal rate calculators: 7,958 rpm and about 1,194 mm/min.
  2. Searches when it needs to

Web results come with their sources, so you can check them.

    • Web search
    • Sources linked
Spectre comparing 6205-2RS and 6205-ZZ bearings after a bearing lookup and a web search, with three sources listed.
  3. Every conversation kept

Pick up where you left off, from any chat.

    • Pick up any chat
The Spectre conversation list, with chats about slotting 6061, bearing closures, an M10 tap drill, an H7/g6 fit and the weight of round bar.

Notes

Remember what worked.

Save what worked, right next to the calculator you used.

  1. Feeds and Speeds notes

Each note keeps the machine, the tool and a photo of the setup.
